See the top 10 website mistakes. Avoid the perils and pitfalls of these 10 and you have a much better chance of having a successful website and online business.
1. Too Much Input From Friends
Friends and family are wonderful and can be fantastic resources to improve your website. But sometimes things can go awry in the wrong places when too much attention is paid to them. Remember you can’t satisfy everyone so keep your message as simple as possible to get something out there as there is a lot of competition online today.
2. Bad Color Scheme
Using a high-contrast color scheme can destroy a website’s usability and even make it impossible to read or use making customers run for an escape. Bright green and neon colors are a no-no.
3. Poor Design
It would seem obvious but finding proper design can be a difficult thing to come by; especially on the cheap. Good design does not ensure that your website will be successful but poor design with bad usability almost guarantees that it will fail. See my post on Top 10 Good Design from legendary designer Dieter Rams
4. Using Flash
Using Flash in a website today is a mistake. With iPhone figures being in the millions and still the most popular mobile device, using flash on your website will not even run on up to 40% of your traffic. Use HTML5 combined with other web technologies that work on all major platforms instead.
5. Not testing in other browsers
Websites need to be tested to reach their full potential. Make sure that your web designer or website works with all major web browsers so that all your potential customers can see your website. These include: Firefox, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, & Internet Explorer version 7+; testing and working with IE6+ gives you extra credit.
6. Ignoring Mobile Users
Not have a mobile site can really hurt your business by you missing out on valuable website traffic. Not to mention regular sites can be very difficult to see on mobile phones or some tablets so make sure that your customers can see you.
7. Not placing yourself on Google
You would be surprised to know that just because you have a website does not guarantee that you will be seen on Google or that your customers can properly find you on valuable search engines. Make sure that you get listed the right way to better your chances of being seen on the vast sea of websites out there. There are a variety of webmaster tools out there to help out.
8. Just building a website
Just because you have a nice website does not mean that anyone will ever see it. It is important that you diversify your web presence to build up your organic search results with Google and other search engines. Having a Yelp, Google+, Facebook, Twitter, and other pages help as does placing links from local businesses. Work with people you know to expand your business and ask them to place links for you on their site and return the favor. The more links your site has to it the better it looks from search engines.
9. Not Keeping Your Website Updated
This is a big one for a lot of businesses. Keep your site updated by sticking to a plan so that it doesn’t say Copyright 2005 on there as that is a flag for customers to go to another site. If updating is too much for you, hire someone to do some updates at least every few months with some company news to keep things fresh with customers. The more dynamic the better.
10. Going Cheap
This is the cause of so many problems with websites out there. It starts with a friend offering to help with the website and ends in frustration as the months pass and nothing is done. The online portion of your business should be treated professionally. It is your digital storefront for all the world to see so invest in it and you will get something back. Make sure to hire a reputable company with a good website themselves and actual people you can speak with and hold accountable with a contract. Website prices have a big range but if you spend less than $800 for a website expect to pay for it with some frustration. Decent websites should range in the $1200 – 2000 range and usually more for custom websites.
Many business owners believe they can do it all. Learning how to build a website is possible with lots of time and effort but so often business owners begin with a prebuilt template or hosting service that offers easy website builder only to be frustrated and end-up with an unfinished or less than par website. Save time and money by hiring professionals to build your online brand.
